Spillover Effects of Home-Based Artificial Intelligence Devices on Work Creativity

Abstract

Past organisational research showed that work-related technology, such as smartphone use for work emails or computer system failures at work, has unfavourable spillover implications for employees’ personal life. However, no research to date has addressed the potential spillover influences of artificial intelligence (AI) devices in employees’ home on their work behaviours. This is a severe oversight considering how home-based AI devices have reached unprecedented rates of penetration and will be an integral part of many modern homes in time to come. In this chapter, we address this gap by first offering an overview of home-based AI devices before proposing several spillover mechanisms through which they could shape work behaviours, specifically work creativity. We also present empirical findings from a field study conducted on 297 full-time employees to test one of these proposed pathways. The results suggest that usage of home-based AI devices is positively linked to users’ work creativity in their formal job via systems thinking, but only in users who have a strong (but not weak) positive attitude towards technology. Next, we discuss future research directions for studying the effects of home-based AI devices on other work-related behaviours such as attitude towards work-based AI and work-family management, and their implications for the broader management and technology literature and practice.
