The Dark Horse of New Tracks and the Life-Death Cycle

Abstract

This chapter introduces the biological concept of the “Lifespan-Heartbeat Hypothesis” and connects it to business. It discusses how companies, like animals, have a limited lifespan dictated by their “heartbeat” or business growth rate. Some companies may have short bursts of success and fade, while others evolve more gradually, suggesting that a company’s ability to survive depends on how well it manages its growth and strategic shifts over time.
