Abstract

This chapter informs the reader on digital technologies that underpin and provide a synergistic impact to manufacturing technologies as a core part of digital manufacturing systems (DMS). We present how advances in computer networking and software systems have made DMS possible, and how their development would affect both the growth and implementation of smart manufacturing. We cover the whole range of digital technologies from the Industry 3.0 era, such as PLCs and CAD/CAM, as well as today’s Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud platforms. We integrate the focus metrics, organizational practices, and the different components of today’s cyber-physical production systems and help the reader understand how to approach the buy, build, or partner decision for implementing smart manufacturing for their scenario. We also share barriers and best practices learned from experience and from peer-reviewed articles. Importantly, these disruptive technologies could affect our future in terms of employment and business prospects.
