Abstract

This chapter provides a selective literature review of Sociocultural Anthropology exclusively related to the theme of agency and its development to uncover hidden connections between culture and agency as well as its development. The author first discusses how culture is defined and can be related to agency and its development. Second, the author explores how academic Anthropology has defined and discussed agency development, although it would not necessarily be explicitly expressed in its texts. Subsequently, she further discusses how Development Anthropology has defined and discussed “agency” and its development in their texts. Finally, the author suggests an alternative form of anthropology that can make working theories on agency development drawn from ‘insiders’ realities and tacit knowledge.
