Abstract

This chapter is a study of South Africa’s public administration system. It examines the current nature and historical background of the public administration and the relevant concepts affecting both central and local government institutions. It begins by looking at the both central and local administration systems and the country case in general. The study finds that the South Africa inherited a fragmented and racially divided administration system consisting of provincial and national levels. However, after the country held its first fully democratic elections in 1994, it has polished the apartheid regime and amalgamated the country’s public administration into a single, accountable, and non-racial administrative system. Additionally, public service institutions have been developed, made more effective, efficiency, and people centered. Nevertheless, the need for effective decentralization is observed as the public administration system of the country reflects a certain degree of decentralization.
