The State of Israel

Abstract

Israel is located in a unique geography in the Middle East that makes it stand out from its neighbors. Its public administration is closely intertwined with the historical, geographical, political, and national security aspects of the society giving it distinctive characteristics from its neighbors. This chapter seeks to examine the functionality, structure, and actors involved in Israel’s public management. It offers insight on a country whose current existence can be traced to declaration of independence in 1948 but has been able to emerge as a competitive economic and military power in several decades as a result of reforms in public administration. The characteristics of Israel’s public administration also reflect the society’s religious and cultural beliefs in addition to influences from various external actors such as the Ottoman Empire, the British administration, and contemporary association with institutions such as the OECD.
