Abstract

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has an important geopolitical position in the South Asia as well as in the world map. Historically administrative system of Pakistan is influenced by colonial rule in the Indian Subcontinent. Federalism, introduced by the colonial British rulers, was adopted as the state principle by the leaders of Pakistan to ensure provincial autonomy and to make the local governance free from central or provincial interference. But the consecutive military regimes and the civilian governments could not empower the local government; instead, each government centralizes the power to central-level and provincial-level administration. Despite taking reform, initiatives by different governments and majority of the reform agenda are failure to ensure good governance in Pakistan. However, present civilian governments are committed to work for the overall development of Pakistan. Current governments have taken steps to make the local government independent, the provincial government autonomous, and the central government more responsive.
