Abstract

This chapter explains the main sources and higher purposes of the moral bases in the concept of Islamic leadership. These main sources and higher purposes of the moral bases of the Islamic leadership are explained by introducing their definitions, etymologies, chronologies, functions, and main references for further study. The three main sources refer to the Qur’an, al-Sunnah, and al-Ijtihad (intellectual reasoning). Meanwhile, the higher purposes refer to the al-Kulliyyāt or al-Darūriyyāt al-Khams, known as the five general or important goals of Islam. All these eight key terms are described and explained in this chapter to shed light on the issue of the Islamic leadership moral base.
