China, the Amazon and Climate Diplomacy

Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of the Amazon and of environmental issues in the dialogues between Brazil and China, analyzing the economic transformation of the rainforest and how it became an important source of soybeans, iron ore and meat to the Chinese market. The text explains how governments and companies try to deal with social and environmental impacts of China’s trade and investment and how BrasiliaBrazilian and Beijing are converging in a more assertive climateClimate change diplomacy, accepting more responsibilities in curbing carbon emissions and protecting the Amazon.
