Abstract

This introduction summarizes the most significant findings of the various contributors to the volume and the new insights these offer into Chinese economic statecraft during the Long 1980s. It briefly discusses the existing literature on economic statecraft, especially that on China, with particular reference to the work of William J. Norris, Shu Guang Zhang, and David A. Baldwin. The introduction then considers the degree to which Chinese policies of the 1980s were carried forward into subsequent decades, especially in terms of Chinese adaptations of existing economic theories and norms, such as neoliberalism, to suit the specific situation of China. It also discusses whether the events of June 1989 can be perceived as a defining moment for Chinese economic statecraft, betokening the decisive decoupling of economic and political reform and the repudiation of Western-style political liberalism.
