Abstract

Special Economic Zones are not a Chinese invention, although many would argue that the Chinese perfected the model. The Chapter provides a historical overview of Special Economic Zones and their format and structure as they evolved over the centuries. It presents the establishment of Special Economic Zones in Africa over recent decades, and provides some comparison of the investment, number of firms and ownership structure of African zones as opposed to zones in other developing nations. Similarly, it considers how these zones have contributed to exports and employment in these nations. The zones in Africa are then described in terms of their activities and industries, with particular attention to the emergence of Chinese owned and operated zones in Africa and elsewhere.
