Abstract

The institutional gap is a key concept in international business research (Berry et al. in Journal of International Business Studies 41:1460–1480, 2010). Recent studies have shown that despite the increasing frequency of social, cultural, and commercial exchanges between countries, there has been no decrease in the institutional distance between them (Hoorn and Maseland in Journal of International Business Studies 47:374–381, 2016). MNEs need to constantly find a balance between the institutional demands of their home and host countries. The institutional gap remains a challenge in business internationalisation (Fortwengel in Organisation Science 28:690–710, 2017).
