Germany: Between Siemens and Specialized Medtech Firms

Abstract

The German medtech industry is characterized by the substantial weight of long-standing SMEs specializing in optical and surgical instruments. Most of them are family-firms founded before World War II (sometimes in the late nineteenth century) and focused on their core competencies. The other major characteristic of this industry is the presence of Siemens, today one of the world’s largest medtech companies. This chapter analyzes the sources of the competitive advantage of this multinational company and discusses the firm’s relations with the dense network of specialized SMEs. Finally, the chapter addresses the issue of the markedly weak presence of US companies. The largest foreign-owned medtech firms established in Germany are not American but Japanese and European.
