Abstract

The sustainable development goals (SDGs) set by UN can be achieved by the effective partnership between public and private sector. This chapter investigates the role of private sector and focuses on the contribution of small businesses. In most countries, the majority of economic production and employment is covered by SMEs and therefore, the business strategies and solutions to achieve SDGs is also significant. It is true that SMEs are less pressed to pursue sustainability goals and own less resources to be used for sustainable management. This chapter discusses what business strategies and innovative solutions can contribute to the achievement of SDGs regardless of their limitations in access to resources and social integration. The concept of creating shared value should be applied to the small business strategy and SMEs’ participation in global value chain can make SMEs access to the international standards to improve sustainability in the world. Lastly, we analysed the SME’s commitment in SDGs in ASEAN context and presented several policy recommendations for ASEAN countries such as government vision and policy transformation, financing institutions, institution reform and regional cooperation. The analysis about the impact of COVID-19 is also added.
