Abstract

The growing practice of information disclosure in Japanese universities has become a mainstream social phenomenon, driven in part by a shortage of students resulting from a rapidly aging population. Internal and external demands for greater disclosure have also increased as a direct result of Japan’s slowing economy and the rising expectations of companies to attract high quality talent. In response, the Japanese government has promulgated a series of laws and regulations to mandate and offer guidance with respect to the development of enhanced disclosureEnhanced disclosure policies. This article offers an overview of information disclosure in Japanese universities, discussing recent developments as well as outstanding problems and exploring effective disclosure strategies from a risk and opportunity perspective. The article concludes with a case study of B University, whose successful disclosure strategies should serve as a model for the future of university information disclosure in Japan.
