Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the way in which people think about and engage with the tourism and travel industry. Understanding how people may respond to this new and changing landscape will be vital if tourism and travel operators hope to recover from the pandemic fallout that has shattered this once vibrant industry. This chapter brings together theory and research from the fields of health psychology and positive psychology to provide insight into the psyche of the individual tourist and explore ways in which the tourism industry can adapt to, and manage, the ongoing presence of COVID-19. This chapter will discuss topics including theories of tourist motivation, tourist resilience and wellbeing, and the psychological processes underpinning the performance of COVID-safe behaviours.
