Abstract

This chapter delves into the critique of Qin Hui’s interpretation of the “Asiatic mode of production” and “Oriental Despotism,” prevalent among neo-liberal scholars. By examining Marx’s original texts and engaging with contemporary scholars like Perry Anderson, it challenges Qin Hui’s portrayal of these concepts. Anderson’s analysis reveals the Eurocentric origins of the notion of “Oriental Despotism” and highlights its inadequacy in understanding diverse social formations. Furthermore, the chapter explores how Qin Hui’s views echo Western Trotskyist perspectives, ultimately advocating for a broader understanding of historical development beyond Western-centric paradigms.
