Lenin’s Theory of the “American Path” and Russian/Soviet Capitalist Agriculture

Abstract

This chapter critiques the neo-liberal perspective advocated by scholars like Qin Hui, specifically their misinterpretation of Lenin’s “American Path” theory and its application to Russian-Soviet agricultural capitalism. The chapter argues that the so-called “American Path” of democratic privatization is misrepresented and distorted by neo-liberal thinkers. Instead, it emphasizes the complexity and paradoxes inherent in the Russian state apparatus, exemplified by conflicts between departments pursuing capitalist development and those safeguarding political stability. The chapter also challenges the assumption that large-scale capitalist agriculture inevitably supersedes small-scale peasant farming, pointing to the unique social relations and natural dependencies in agriculture that differ significantly from industrial relations.
