Abstract

The last two decades witnessed the rise of state-owned multinationals from emerging markets. These multinationals have become essential links in the global value chain. This chapter discusses how SOE’s economic power and influence has expanded beyond their local economies. SOEs from capital-abundant countries such as China have been proactive in exploring business opportunities in overseas markets. SOEs are building an upstream global supply chain through outward FDI and M&A activities, in many cases, with the support of the governments.
