Abstract

This chapter discusses the roles of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), especially those with mixed ownership between state capital and private capital, in emerging markets in Asia. SOEs contribute significantly to the recent robust growth of the region. Within these economies, the state exerts significant influence on business as a regulator and as a shareholder, which affects firms’ corporate governance, strategic business direction and their decision-making. This poses an issue with Western countries that are only familiar with the free-market concept. There are concerns about the competitive advantages these SOEs have from receiving state subsidies and other preferential treatments from the state government. The chapter also introduces our empirical research to discover how state-related factors could affect firms’ mergers and acquisitions (M&A) performance in Vietnam.
