Driving Factors of Adopting 4.0 IR Technologies in the Logistics Sector

Abstract

Logistics innovation literature has recognized that organizational decisions regards investing in 4.0 IR technologies are driven by financial gains and economic efficiencies. Yet, these might not be the only aspects; instead, they are influenced by the rational decision-making perspective dominant in specific industry, which has not yet been empirically investigated. Using the institutional theory, this study examines the main driving factors that encourage or, maybe force, the adoption of 4.0 IR technologies in the logistics industry. Using a survey, data were collected from 104 logistics firms in Oman. Results of this study reveal that both memetic and normative pressures strongly drive the adoption of 4.0 IR, whereas coercive pressure does not have significant effects. This may suggest that the memetic and normative pressures shall be better considered as antecedents to the adoption of 4.0 IR, while coercive pressures shall be considered as consequences. In addition, the study discloses that while firm size tends to have a positive effect on adopting such technologies, whereas, firm’s age is insignificantly related. Further practical and theoretical implications are suggested from the findings of this study.
