Abstract

Cooperative banking in India dates back to decades and the contribution of the sector in the development of the country has been phenomenal. This empirical research assesses the position of district cooperative banks (DCBs) spread across fourteen districts in the state of West Bengal for the period 2011–2017. The researchers apply data envelopment approach using the two-input, two-output model under the assumption of variable returns to scale. The inputs are borrowings and deposits whereas the outputs are loans and investment. The efficiency is looked at from three angles viz. overall (technical) efficiency, purely technical (managerial) efficiency and scale efficiency. The study also looks at the returns to scale of the different banks which show varying returns. The investigators also test for the difference in efficiency score between these banks of North and South Bengal which finds that there is no significant difference among the banks of the two regions of West Bengal.
