Abstract

To reinforce what is argued in Chapter 3 , Yang Songlin in this chapter points out that two sets of discrepant data exist in all four major population indicators in the official data, i.e. year-end population, numbers of birth and death, and population growth. The inconsistency between what is termed as “registered population growth” and “natural population growth” causes confusion. Yang explores the historical and social factors to identify causes of discrepancies and inconsistency between these two sets of data and, as a result, offers a method of adjustment to improve statistical accuracy.
