Abstract

The fourth chapter reviews the language used by key leaders in building their companies. This chapter will specifically explore how language plays a motivating factor in building organizational productivity. In order to promote a growth mindset, it is vital to praise the efforts of employees who choose challenging and novel tasks. Research suggests praising intelligence and traits can be counterproductive (Dweck in American Psychologist 41(10):1040–1048, 1986; Yang and Li, 2011). The language that leaders use can create a transformable personal quality among employees as employees try to explore new ideas (Dweck et al. in Psychological Inquiry 6(4):267–285, 1995). Growth minded leaders focus on praising and encouraging the effort, hard work, and persistence of employees instead of praising their talent. Praising effort also promotes resilience among employees. Growth mindset accepts challenges and obstacles and in addition, it focusing on people’s effort. It also recognizes that people can learn from criticism. Growth mindset leaders facilitate the opportunity for employees to express their opinions honestly and allow disagreements with their managers to win better ideas in the workplace (Dweck in Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Random House, New York, NY, 2006; Heslin, Latham, & VandeWalle, 2005). Apple founder, Steve Jobs, clearly mentioned that the best ideas must win no matter where they come from in organizations. This chapter will explore the power that managers’ words have on employees.
