Abstract

This chapter will provide a review on theories of personality traits including new directions in personality theories and their impact in the workplace in a digital environment. It will explore personality and environmental influences on leadership abilities. Understanding individual traits and triggers can help us to recognize cognitive and behavior patterns of employees. Significant work has been done on various personality theories. Research has established that personality plays a significant role in influencing individuals’ behaviors (Allport in Personality: A psychological interpretation, H. Holt and Company, New York, 1937; Athota & O’Connor, 2014). The Big Five personality dimensions of openness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, extraversion, and agreeableness have been found to have acceptable reliability and validity to measure workplace behavior (Goldberg in 14:2002, 1999). Research has also highlighted that individuals who score high on openness to experience and extraversion have been found to have more innovative ability. Openness to experience is associated with receptiveness to new ideas, interactions, and environments. These individuals are open to creativity and trying new things. I will argue that these traits are essential to a growth mindset in organizations in a digital age. This chapter will connect the review on current personality theories, with what we know about personality and how this applies to individuals in organizations.
