Abstract

China has in recent past managed to establish spiraling economic relationship with Africa within the political economy of the current global economic configuration and transformations. This has created critical debate surrounding Africa’s Shift towards China as a result of complex shift in the world economy from Western dominance to East with China being the lead in new global economy system. In this chapter, I assess pros and cons debates on China’s new move towards Africa which leads to analysis of both challenges and opportunities for the African continent. There is amounting literature on this China–Africa debate with most exploit various pragmatic strategies in order to describe China as benefiter while others describe China as role model for Africa leadership to pull the continent from its current struggling economic situation.
