Abstract

This chapter seeks to assess the political context of China’s move towards investing in Africa. It briefly explores new developments that have taken place between Africa and China in more recent times in an attempt to investigate the different dynamics between strategic, economic, political and cultural factors that have contributed to the current level of China’s involvement in the African continent. It basically aims at exploring some of the key factors and policy objectives driving Africa’s increasing engagement with China and the debate surrounding this shift. The chapter ends with a brief overview of institutions such as FOCAC as template for a new path in China–Africa relationship.
