Abstract

The nearly 200 countries in today’s world each seek to advance their own national interests. However, many problems are not confined to just one country. For example, the emission of greenhouse gases such as $$\mathrm {CO}_2$$ CO 2 by certain countries causes the whole world to suffer the consequences of global warming. International organizations are working on these kinds of global issues that affect the global community. One of the largest such organizations is the United Nations (UN), headquarters in New York and with 193 member countries as of 2020. International organizations help to set the international agenda, mediate political negotiations, and provide a forum for political efforts in pursuit of national interests. They define issues of international importance and contribute to the determination of governmental priorities and policymaking on issues that must be considered collectively.
