Abstract

This chapter aims at holistic understanding of healthcare systems of SIDS and analyses available evidence on health issues, disease and mortality patterns, environmental and ecological disturbances, healthcare financing, and delivery as well as institutional capacity of these nations. We observe that many SIDS have depicted reduction in mortality between the years 2000 and 2015. Considering the notable variations in environmental and climatic indicators, health policy should tune better. However, the health policy response to invest in national nutrition action plans and interventions to promote healthy eating and physical activity has been rather unsuccessful. Government health expenditure is skewed towards curative care and lacks focus on primary care services like immunization coverage and efforts to lower infant mortality rates. More developmental inputs to enhance production and higher per capita income are essential for adequate health resources and increased longevity in SIDS.
