Climate Change and Heatwaves

Abstract

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC) have predicted that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) will be beset with increasingly extreme climatic events, including cyclones, floods and heatwaves. SIDS are well used to cyclones, flooding and hot summer weather. What they are not used to is the intense heat of heatwaves beyond their normal range of temperatures. This chapter is about what they may expect based upon evidence from recent heatwaves elsewhere; their social, economic and environmental impact and what can be done effectively to prepare SIDS to adapt and mitigate the expected fatal and other primary and secondary worst outcomes of the heatwaves that are on the way. Heatwaves not only present direct risks to human and animal life but also present longer-term risks to food security, water and energy supplies and overall economic and social sustainability. Many SIDS are poorly prepared for the risks of heatwaves.
