Abstract

Forest Rights Act (FRA) 2006 aims at considering the rights of the forest-dependent local communities in India. The enactment and implementation of historic legislation FRA 2006 facilitated the traditional forest dweller (Lodha community of West Bengal) land ownership to promote agriculture-based sustainable livelihood. However, inter-community conflicts over forest resource access, negligence of customary laws, and rejection of claims against land and forest rights have emanated as the consequence of the implementation of the forest rights act. Therefore, endorsing the secured livelihood and sustainable community development through executing FRA has come out as a vexing issue in the territory of Lodha tribal community. In this perspective, this present study explores the critical points, such as customary laws, inter-community conflicts including restricted access in the forest, and rejection of claims regarding to FRA implementation. Furthermore, it suggests a sustainable community development model that may further ameliorate in securing livelihood sustainability and accomplishing sustainable development goals at larger.
