Civil Society’s Contribution to Women Empowerment: Bangladesh Perspective

Abstract

Civil society generally refers to society other than the government and business; in this regard, it can be considered the third sector. The motive of civil society is not to generate profit but to work collectively for a common goal wherein charity or service for common interest is fundamental. The contribution of civil society is increasing; currently, it plays a crucial role in South Asian countries, especially in Bangladesh. In the case of women, a number of researchers are investigating how civil society and women empowerment are related in Bangladesh. And how is this sector contributing to the empowerment of women in Bangladesh? The present study is a small endeavour to determine answers to the questions stated above: to investigate the contribution of civil society to women empowerment in Bangladesh. The chapter follows an interview-oriented qualitative research methodology with a purposive sampling technique wherein both primary and secondary data were collected in order to achieve the research objectives. The overall finding of the study was that Bangladeshi civil society is contributing to the empowerment of women in three aspects: raising awareness, ensuring participation, and taking actions.
