Abstract

This chapter defines a General Schemas Theory that can be used as a basis for the science of systems. Systems Theory only deals with one schema, i.e., the “system,” and does not deal with other schemas such as pattern, form, meta-system, domain, etc. This chapter describes the nature of schemas and how they relate to each other. A schema can be thought of as a general structure for the organization and the comprehension of experience. The notion of schema was first introduced by Kant in his book Critique of Pure Reason. Since that time, the concept has been used in a variety of settings with many different meanings. This chapter will address the nature of schemas in terms of the Western Philosophical and Scientific Tradition. These are the foundations that must be explored if we are to build a General Schemas Theory as a grounding for Systems Theory that Systems Engineering can use as a foundation for its practice.
