Abstract

Amid visions of AI-driven technological wonders, economic growth in the developed world is sluggish and prospects are gloomy. Populations are graying and shrinking. The rich world may face a period when progress moves backward. How to decline elegantly and to shrink without causing chaos is the major system challenge of our times. This chapter presents an outline of the system dynamics and focuses on the healthcare systems coming under strain. The empirical context, broadly speaking, is the rich world, with emphasis on Northern Europe and Japan. The USA and the developing world exhibit different dynamics.
