Abstract

Zusammenfassung Nach ihrem Statut ist die Oesterreichische Nationalbank verpflichtet, die Kaufkraft des österreichischen Geldes im Inland sowie im Verhältnis zu den wertbeständigen Währungen des Auslands zu erhalten. Sie vermochte dieser Verpflichtung nicht nachzukommen. Innerhalb des letzten Jahrzehnts stieg der Indes der Verbraucherpreise in Österreich im Jahresdurchschnitt um 3,5%, das entspricht einer Kaufkraftentwertung des Schillings in diesem Zeitraum um etwa ein Drittel. Ähnlich vollzog sich die Entwicklung in den übrigen Industrieländern der westlichen Welt. Haben deren Zentralbanken tatsächlich versagt, oder sind andere Gründe dafür verantwortlich, daß das Phänomen, die schleichende Inflation genannt, bisher nicht wirksam bekämpft werden konnte?
