Abstract

Zusammenfassung Eine Kryptowährung existiert ausschließlich im digitalen Bereich, um dort als Tauschmittel zu dienen. Einträge von Einheiten in einer dezentralisierten Konsensus-basierten Datenbank (Blockchain) – Token oder Krypto-Token genannt – bilden das Gefüge der Kryptowährung. Wie der Name schon sagt, stützt sich das den Kryptowährungen zugrunde liegende Konstrukt in hohem Maße auf Kryptografie, um zu gewährleisten, dass Transaktionen verifiziert werden können und sicher sind, und um das Angebot an neuen Einheiten zu kontrollieren. Bereits während des Technologiebooms in den 1990er-Jahren ebneten Pionierunternehmer mit ersten Versuchen von kryptobasierten digitalen Währungen den Weg für Bitcoin. DigiCash, ein von David Chaum im Jahre 1989 gegründetes Unternehmen, hatte einen erheblichen Anteil an den frühen Entwicklungen (Tapscott und Tapscott 2018). Chaums Unternehmen war einzigartig in seinem Streben, Transaktionen zu anonymisieren, und war dadurch ein Wegbereiter von dem, was noch kommen sollte (Chaum 1983). Doch Chaum war seiner Zeit voraus, sodass DigiCash, so wie die meisten anderen frühen Versuche, nicht überleben konnte.
