A Study on the Method and Contents of Construction Management Education in UK and Japan

Abstract

This study aims to survey the method of CM education and its curriculum at several British universities (educational institutions) that have established partnerships with British construction organizations such as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), analyze and compare them with the construction education curriculum used in Japan’s universities, and identify issues related to introducing the CM method in Japan. The survey took place between August 9 and September 20, 2013 at some British universities and covered topics related to the CM curriculum. Interviews were also held. Based on this information, the education methods used at British universities to train students in the knowledge required to undertake CM tasks in the British construction industry, as well as the contents of those methods, will be summarized. Furthermore, the collaborative education and partnership initiatives with CIOB and RICS will be summarized. Based on the information collected from the survey on the British university curriculum, and the related interviews, the study will make comparisons with the construction education offered at Japanese universities, and discuss how the CM method can take root in Japan, along with other issues.
