Abstract

Zusammenfassung Seit dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion und des Zerfalls des Warschauer Paktes 1991 hatten der Westen und Russland drei Jahrzehnte Zeit, in Europa eine gemeinsame Sicherheitsarchitektur zu entwickeln, wobei natürlich neben führenden europäischen NATO-Ländern auch die USA in entsprechende Verhandlungsprozesse einzubinden gewesen wäre. Der Ukraine-Russland-Krieg zeigt, dass das auf tragische Weise nicht gelungen ist. Besonders wichtig sind die US-Russland-Beziehungen, weil sich hier die alten Gegner des Kalten Krieges in veränderter Weise gegenüberstanden. Die Vereinigten Staaten sahen sich seit 1991 nicht mehr der Sowjetunion gegenüber, sondern einem neuen Russland, wobei es wichtige Fragen der Rüstungskontrolle gab, aber auch Kooperationsfragen: etwa beim Projekt einer internationalen Weltraumstation.
