Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die während der vergangenen Jahrzehnte etablierten Erfolge einer sich allmählich etablierenden Public Health wurden während der bisherigen Pandemie maximal reduziert. Die über Jahrhunderte etablierte Medizin dominiert mit den tradierten Maßnahmen der Hygiene, der Virologie und der Epidemiologie das Geschehen. Sich davon weitgehend unbeachtet entwickelnde Langzeitfolgen legen offen, dass parallel zur unbestritten notwendigen medizinischen Komponente ein eigenständiger und neuer Bereich der öffentlichen Gesundheit erforderlich ist: die Public Health. Die bereits in der Ottawa Charta (1986) geforderte Neuorientierung der Gesundheitsdienste muss nun erfolgen, um einer dramatischen Beschleunigung der epidemiologischen Transition damit effizient und effektiv zu begegnen. Der vorliegende Beitrag fokussiert, wie die öffentliche Gesundheit von Anbeginn eine medizinische Domäne war, was Auswirkungen bis in die Gegenwart hat. Eine grundsätzliche Neuorientierung ist daher nicht nur anzudenken, sondern umzusetzen.
