Abstract

Chinese economic history spans several thousand years, but only the period from the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 is presented. Initially, the economy was characterized by the construction after the civil wars and the Second World War. From 1957 onwards, there were power struggles and Mao Zedong was deposed after the “Great Leap Forward”, which ended in disaster, only to regain power during the Cultural Revolution. The period following his death in 1976 was marked by the opening of the country and exceptional economic development, culminating in the country’s accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001.
