Abstract

The National Bureau of Statistics of the People’s Republic of China is responsible for collecting, evaluating and publishing economic data. For years, criticism has been levelled not only at the inconsistency of the data sets but also at the lack of transparency with regard to the methods used to obtain the data. The large number of officials at different levels means that data can hardly be traced back to their origin. The example of the unemployment rate, which has been consistent for years, can be used to show which institutional and external factors can have an influence on the statistics. Criticism from various academics led to a reform in 2018 in the measurement of the unemployment rate, which makes the data obtained since then more robust.
