Abstract

The chapter deals with food supply in the PRC. Current data will be used to examine the extent to which self-sufficiency is possible today and in the future. To this end, the current and future demand for food by the Chinese population will first be considered. From the comparison of the demand with the current production volumes, self-sufficiency rates for the individual food categories are derived. From the inconsistencies within the comparison of these rates with PRC imports and exports, it is suggested that some food products have lower self-sufficiency rates. A forecast of the evolution of self-sufficiency rates is then shown. In contrast, the further development of the PRC’s production possibilities is presented. In particular, the reduction of cultivable land and the inequality in the distribution of water resources are considered.
