Abstract

Zusammenfassung Mit dem Brundtland-Bericht „Our Common Future“ von 1987 wurde dem Begriff der nachhaltigen Entwicklung eine konkrete Definition und Perspektive gegeben. Seither versuchen Management- und Berichterstattungsansätze zu Nachhaltigkeit eine zunehmende Integration von ESG-Aspekten in die Steuerung von Organisationseinheiten zu erreichen. Dabei unterscheiden sich die einzelnen Initiativen zum Teil maßgeblich in ihrer Fokussierung, Zielgruppendefinition, der Verwendung des Wesentlichkeitsbegriffs und Vergleichbarkeit der genutzten Inhalte und Datenpunkte. Bisher schaffen es nur sehr wenige Ansätze, den tatsächlichen Beitrag einer Organisation zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung zu beschreiben und verharren in einem Stadium der ESG-Fortschrittsberichterstattung anstelle einer Nachhaltigkeitsberichterstattung. Dieses Kapitel beschreibt die wesentlichen Eckpunkte der historischen Entwicklung der Debatte zur Berichterstattung, stellt zentrale Begriffsklärungen vor und bringt aktuelle regulatorische Entwicklungen in Verbindung zu den notwendigen Grundzügen einer Nachhaltigkeitsberichterstattung.
