Abstract

Zusammenfassung Die seit Beginn der Industrialisierung im Jahre 1709 (mit dem ersten Hochofen auf Steinkohlebasis) schrittweise eingesetzten fossilen Energieträger Kohle, dann ab 1859 Mineralöl und ab dem 20. Jahrhundert Erdgas werden in einem Rückblick vorgestellt. Immerhin rettete das ab 1709 die britischen Wälder und ab 1860 die großen Walarten vor ihrer Vernichtung durch menschliche Nutzung. Vor- und Nachteile, aber auch die herausragende Rolle der Energieträger bei der Industrialisierung samt den dadurch erst möglichen technischen und sonstigen Innovationen in Wissenschaft, Medizin und Lebensbedingungen vieler Menschen werden diskutiert.
