Abstract

A considerable amount of research has been conducted on business models. Yet, success of business models, and, in particular, what influences their ability to scale have remained widely unexplored. However, in a digital world, being able to quickly scale a business model is important to compete. This study therefore aims at discovering themes that enable digital business models to scale by elaborating on the core question: Which constituent activities of a business model, described by their content, structure, and governance, enable a digital business model to scale? To address this gap, a case study analysis of an online music streaming service startup is used with a grounded theory approach to identify and examine activities and contextual elements that enable and inhibit its business model to scale. Our study reveals that a range of activities can be attributed to three major themes: (1) the principle of data-driven decision taking, (2) the notion of iterating fast and learning quickly, and (3) the acquisition of funding.
