Abstract

Zusammenfassung Neue konzeptionelle Entwicklungen wie Industrie 4.0 gelten in vielen Fällen als Domäne von jungen, kleinen Unternehmen, die im Sinne einer Start-Up-Kultur auf Innovationen fokussiert sind oder als Themenfeld von Großunternehmen, die mit Hilfe von Forschungs- und Entwicklungsabteilungen und eigenen Engineering-Ansätzen sowie einem großen Budget in der Lage sind, größere Projekte zu testen und eigene Konzepte zu entwickeln. Da die deutsche Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft stark von den erfolgreichen Entwicklungen des Mittelstands abhängt, der eine Schlüsselstellung für die diversifizierte Wirtschaft und eine robuste Entwicklung des Wohlstands besitzt, kommt der hier behandelten Frage, wie mittelständische Unternehmen mit der digitalen Transformation und der Herausforderung von Industrie 4.0 zurechtkommen, eine zentrale Rolle zu.
