Abstract

Zusammenfassung Ideen sind nicht nur das Wanderfreudigste auf dieser Welt, sie sind auch ausgesprochen störrisch darin, ihre eigenen Wege zu finden, schrieb Arthur O. Lovejoy (1940, S. 23) in seinem programmatischen Aufsatz zur ersten Nummer des neuen Journal of the History of Ideas. Was für Historiker den Reiz an der Geschichte der Ideen als Forschungsgegenstand ausmacht, sollte den spezialisierten Disziplinen Ansporn zur Pflege ihrer Fachgeschichte sein. Nicht um die Wanderlust der Ideen zu bremsen. Vielmehr liegt die Förderung ihrer Verbreitung regelmäßig im Interesse der Fächer. Selbstvergessenheit ob der eigenen Ideengeschichte führt allerdings nicht nur dazu, dass eine Disziplin Problemlösungen häufiger erneut erfindet statt an vorhandenen Ansätzen anzuknüpfen, sondern birgt vor allem auch die Gefahr, dass die konstituierenden Probleme und Fragestellungen verloren gehen (Brockhoff, 2018). Thesenhaft ließe sich formulieren, dass die für reife Disziplinen angestrebte kumulative Wissensentwicklung auch ideengeschichtlicher Selbstreflexion bedarf.
