Abstract

For roughly 50 years the market share of European shipyards concerning the global shipbuilding output has been decreasing. That is to say, not only since recently, have European shipyards had to face a difficult economic situation and accordingly had to identify strategies in order to survive global competition. Actually, the strategy seems to further differentiate from competitors by focusing on the construction of highly sophisticated special purpose vessels. However, the European shipyards’ qualitative advantages and technological leadership will not last forever. Among others, this can be seen in the fact that for instance, Japanese and South Korean shipyards have successfully entered the market for cruise liners already.
