Abstract

The background to this work is the rising competition European shipyards have to face in the global market. Recently, due to heavy increases in the capacity of Asian shipyards and accelerated by the economic downturn in Europe and Northern America, the market share of European shipyards regarding the segment of merchant ships further decreased. As of December 31st, 2011, the EU-27 countries’ proportion of the global shipbuilding output amounted to just 4.0%. With market shares of above 60% at the beginning of the 1960s, up to the 1970s with market shares of around 40%, still (Western) Europe was the world’s largest shipbuilding region. Then Japan took the lead before South Korea became the dominant power at the end of the 1990s.
