Outpatient Scheduling Under Multiple Providers and Revisit Based on Single Equipment

Abstract

Outpatient scheduling is the process to shorten patients’ waiting time, reduce medical costs and improve resource utilization with the consideration of patients’ arrival pattern and providers’ diagnostic characteristics. Different from western developed countries, the problems of imperfect appointment mechanism, imbalanced ability of providers, highlighted doctor-patient conflict and unreasonable allocation of resources in China all lead to long waiting time and high reliability of medical examination. Therefore, we take multiple providers diagnosis, single equipment for medical examination and revisit procedure into consideration and set up outpatient scheduling model in primary care. After model verification and validation, we design 6 scheduling rules in the simulation, according to the reality. We also make sensitivity analysis for the percentage of scheduled patients and walk-ins and for appointed treatment time of scheduled patients. Through the simulation experiment, we found the optimal percent and treatment time.
